English
Style

There are many levels of language in spoken and written English.  They range from almost unintelligible mutters and groans (intimate style), through colloquial slang and professional jargon, right up to formal, correct English such as is used in law courts.  The most formal style of all, the frozen style, is used in rituals such as wedding ceremonies.  No one level is “better” than another.  Each has its place and function.  The factors that determine which level of usage is appropriate are your message, your audience/readers, and your purpose in writing.

Style is achieved at Royal Roads University through adherence to the Royal Roads University Style Guide.  The Environmental Science Program has its own version of the Style Guide that you will be expected to use in all written reports.
