Guidelines for Correcting Misplaced & Dangling Modifiers

  • To make sure a modifier is in the right place, ask yourself, “What does it apply to?” and put it beside that word or words; eg., Only I love you (only applies to I).  I only love you (only applies to love).  I love only you (only applies to you).
  • Add a subject; eg., The new Thunderbird is the car to buy, looking for power, style, and an affordable price (dangling modifier).  Looking for power, style, and an affordable price, James decided the new Thunderbird was the car to buy (correctly placed modifier).
  • Change the dangler to a dependent clause; eg., The new Thunderbird is the car to buy, since James is looking for power, style, and an affordable price.
