Chemistry
Introduction

Why is chemistry included in this workbook?

Chemistry is a fundamental science that underlies all aspects of environmental science.  Before we can begin to discuss the many applications of chemistry, it is critical for you to have an understanding of some basic concepts and vocabulary.

Your knowledge of chemistry will help you to understand the technical aspects of areas that will be covered in the BSc. program such as:

  • Chemical fate and transport in the environment (Atmospheric processes, Hydrology, Soil Science)
  • Industrial processes and human impacts
  • Ecotoxicology and risk assessment
  • Standards, guidelines and legislation
  • Analytical chemistry

How is the chemistry section of the workbook organized?

The chemistry section is organized into nine problem sets. Each problem set covers one of the key concept areas that will be discussed below.

When should I work through this section and how long will it take me to complete?

You will need to complete this section prior to your arrival for Foundations. Depending on your familiarity with chemistry, you should expect to spend 20-50 hours on this section. You should also plan to review this material prior to the start of relevant courses.
