Chemistry
Concepts
Following completion of this section of the workbook, the student should be able to:
- Use chemical formulae in stoichiometric calculations.
- Understand the concepts of structure, properties and periodicity, including nuclear chemistry.
- Understand the relationship between chemical bonding and physical properties.
- Use the Bronsted-Lowry theory in explaining acid-base reactions and in distinguishing between strong and weak acids and bases.
- Solve simple problems based on solution equilibria using solubility product constants (Ksp), acid and base ionization constants (Ka and Kb).
- Understand the fundamentals of reaction kinetics and concepts of energy, enthalpy, entropy and free energy (thermodynamics).
- Define oxidation and reduction; balance redox reactions by the oxidation number method and by the half reaction method.
- Describe the energetics associated with the operation of electrochemical and electrolytic cells.
- Understand the fundamental concepts of organic chemistry.
