Statistics

Some definitions:

  • Mean - of a data set: statistics1 where x is a score in the data set and n is the number of scores in the set.
  • Median - of a data set is the middle score when the scores have been arranged in order of size. If there is an even number of scores, then the median is equal to the mean of the two middle scores.
  • Mode - of a data set the score that occurs most frequently. If no score occurs more than once there is no mode.
  • Variance - a measure of spread in the data set. statistics2
  • Standard deviation - the square root of the variation.

Probability

Before defining probability, a few definitions.

  • Experiment - an activity the results in an observation (toss a die).
  • Outcome - one of the observations. (4)
  • Sample - Space set of all possible outcomes. ({1,2,3,4,5,6})
  • Event - a set of one or more outcomes. ({5,6})

If each outcome in the sample space has the same chance of occurring, the probability of event E is defined as

t1

Another way to describe probability is an empirical one. In this case we actually do the experiment.
