Guidelines for Correcting Sentence Fragments

  • To change a sentence fragment into a complete sentence, add whatever is missing:  a subject, a verb, or both; eg., Without any notion about planning is missing a subject and verb.  A corrected sentence could be He proceeded without any notion about planning.
  • A dependent clause must be attached to an independent clause.  If it stands alone, it is a sentence fragment; eg., Because I have poor study habits is a dependent clause. A corrected sentence could be Because I have poor study habits, I have failed my courses.
