Guidelines for Using a Question Mark & Exclamation Mark

  • Direct questions are followed by question marks; eg., Did you thank everyone who sent donations?
  • Statements with questions added are punctuated with question marks; eg., We are on time, aren’t we?
  • Use an exclamation mark after a word, phrase, or clause expressing strong emotion; eg., Incredible!  I didn’t notice the earthquake at all.
