Guidelines for Organizing Critiques

  • In writing a critique in summary form, use the same rules of brevity and formatting as in any other summary.  However, the content and tone of a critique are unlike a simple summary; therefore, use a critical, comparative technique when writing a critique.
  • Comparisons may be made between things within the text of the piece you are critiquing; eg., comments on consistency of argument or contradictory statements of evidence.
  • Comparisons may also be made with outside things; eg., with other similar works or aspects of research, with benchmarks, or with commonly accepted standards of a scientific or technical nature.
  • Thus, a critique generally includes the subjective opinions, views, or beliefs of the commentator, and in this way, differs in content from the objective essay or summary.
