AMANDA SWINIMER ROBERT THOMPSON PHILLIP VANNINI JENNIFER WALINGA
Amanda Swinimer’s deep love
of the ocean and the rainforest brought her to the west coast
of Vancouver Island where she started her own business, Dakini Tidal Wilds, in 2003. For 12 years, Amanda has been sustainably harvesting, by hand, edible seaweeds, wild herbs and crafting products from these wild gifts.
She has taught at UVic, Bam eld Marine Science Center, public schools and through private venues. She holds a BSc degree in Marine Biology, minor in Oceanography from Dalhousie University.
Robert Thompson, MA Leadership and Training, (ABD) EdD. (in
Online and Distance Education),
is a lifelong educator/storyteller providing organizational and individual training, mentoring
and presentations with a background in tourism leadership and management, business, operations and implementing technology in educational and training environments. He is Adjunct Professor, School of Tourism and Hotel Management, and works with BA Business program, MA programs in Education, and the International Study Centre at RRU.
Phillip Vannini, PhD, is an accomplished ethnographer and author who studies subjects such as marine mobilities, off-grid energy assemblages and the social aspects of human embodiment. His research interests broadly include material culture, technology
and culture, sensory studies and cultural geographies. His book, Off the Grid: Re-Assembling Domestic Life, is the culmination of research into the lives of people across Canada who live off the grid. He also collaborated on a documentary lm based on his research, Life Off Grid.
Jennifer Walinga, PhD. In her
25 years as an educator, researcher and consultant in the area of organizational behaviour and learning, Dr. Walinga has seen how successfully the tools she learned in the rowing shell transfer to daily life as she weaves colourful stories and videos throughout her presentation and includes an interactive component that shows how physiological principles are just as present at work as they are in sport.
Duncan Taylor, PhD, teaches at the School of Environmental Studies, University of Victoria.
His research applies integral and complex systems theory to the understanding of individual as well as societal and biophysical interactions and transformations. In turn, he has focused on integral world views, B.C. forest issues, community and environmental restoration, and the value of wilderness and adventure therapy.
Joanne Thomson, BA, MAdEd,
is a full-time visual artist working primarily in watercolour, pushing the limits of the medium to include large works on canvas. Her quiet and contemplative approach to art making is evident in her landscapes, illustrations and in the Bottled series. She describes her works as “strong images created gently”. Joanne holds a Master’s degree in adult education. She encourages her students to explore the creative process through research and experimentation with art making.
Garth von Buchholz is a Victoria- based digital media analyst, consultant and producer who works on digital media and social media projects with clients in business, government, education and non-pro t. Garth is also an author, educator and certi ed usability analyst. In 2010, he
was ranked as one of the “Top 25 Web Content Strategists” at the Lavacon in San Diego, California. He is currently writing a book about Internet content strategy titled Contentology.
Margaret Walters is author of
The Cosmic Pilgrim, a book on eco- spirituality. She works in Programs in Earth Literacies and for the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul. Margaret holds a Bachelor’s of Theology degree and her background is in teaching, pastoral and retreat work. An encounter with Brian Swimme’s work in the 1990’s revolutionized her personal cosmology and she is an enthusiastic proponent of the new sacred story with a special interest
in Teilhard de Chardin.
