... that Hatley Castle was built in 1908 by James Dunsmuir?
James lived at Hatley Park with his wife Laura until his death in 1920, at age 69. Laura remained on the estate with her daughter, Eleanor, until her death in 1937. Eleanor died six months later. From 1937
to 1940, the estate sat vacant and was maintained by a caretaker.
... that in 1940 Hatley Park was purchased by the Government
of Canada for $75,000? That same year the naval Training Establishment was commissioned as HMSC Royal Roads, the name originating from the o -shore anchorage in the Juan de Fuca Strait. The purpose of the school was to train reserve o cers for service in World War ii.
... that Winston Churchill, and Edward, Prince of Wales visited
the Dunsmuirs in 1929? Queen Elizabeth visited the site when
it was Royal Roads Military College in 1953 (before she was crowned) and has been back twice.
... that peacocks were  rst donated to Royal Roads Military College in the 1960s by a family from the Okanagan region of bC? no one seems to know why, but they remain a colourful attraction for visitors.
... that Hatley Park is considered one of the  nest examples of an intact Edwardian estate and was designated a national historic site in 1995?
