Gary Backlund is a Master Woodland Manager and his daughter Katherine has a Forest Resources Technology Program diploma. The family specializes
in producing lumber for the woodworking market and in non- timbre forest resources. Gary and Katherine are the authors of the book, Bigleaf Sugaring – Tapping the Western Maple.
Michelle Beauchamp, PhD, worked as an investigative journalist in London, England, writing on social issues for The Guardian and The Independent. Her work has taken her to Northern Ireland, Germany, Nicaragua,
El Salvador and Guatemala. She has also worked as an editor and writing coach and returned to school as an adult learner, earning her B.A. from the University of Winnipeg, where she was awarded a Gold Medal. She completed both her M.A. and Ph.D. at UVic.
Dwayne Beaver is a writer, director and producer working
in  lm, television and digital media. He won the Best Direction Gemini Award for his work in the documentary series Conviction Kitchen and multiple Leo Awards for the OLN comedy series Road Hockey Rumble. He teaches in Capilano University’s Motion Picture Arts, School of Communication, and at UBC where he serves as the Rogers Multicultural Teaching Fellow
and the 2013 Phil Lind Artist in Residence in the Theatre and
Film Department.

Lori Austein is an educator, lawyer and mediator, as well as a certi ed trainer and facilitator of the council process. After spending  ve years working with the extensive council program at Palms Middle School
in Los Angeles, the last two as c o-coordinator, Lori is experienced
in the uses of council in education. She has facilitated Council I, Council I for Educators and Council II trainings in the United States and Canada. She eagerly strives to live the way of council.
Robert Bateman has been an artist and naturalist since his early childhood. He is one Canada’s foremost artists depicting the world of nature and his passion
for the well-being of human and natural heritage have made him an environmental champion and hero for the nature world. In Hope and Wild Apples, his latest book, he urges us to make strong efforts to reconnect by slowing down, paying attention, getting acquainted and falling in love with nature.
