Jackie Scales is in the business of advocating for and creating a more inclusive world.
As a senior manager in the human capital and consulting practice in Deloitte’s Toronto office, she works across industries to open dialogue about what it means to have a diverse and inclusive work environment, and why that is good for business.
“There is a power in tapping into diverse cultures and diverse thought. We can change opinion, inform opinion and create new opinions,” she says.
A strong proponent of education, Scales strives to address the divide between perceived diversity and true inclusion. Her work addresses challenges and barriers people may face in the workplace in relation to their mental and physical abilities, religion, sexual identity and other non-visible differences.
She is a recognized leader for her work in business planning, diversity, inclusion and best practice strategies. She started her career with CIBC, transitioning from a frontline employee to manager leading Internet-based projects before her final promotion to general manager and executive director for distribution services. Through her work there and now at Deloitte, Scales has implemented new programs that support employee commitment and improve staff efficiencies.
In addition to her professional work, Scales co-founded Leaders To Be Proud Of, an awards program that recognizes gay and gay-positive business leaders who have made significant contributions to addressing LGBT issues or strengthening advocacy. Scales is the national chair of LGBT Employees at Deloitte (LEAD) and also leads Deloitte’s diversity practice for the Greater Toronto area.
She is executive director of the Community One Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports the development of the LGBT communities in Greater Toronto. She is also a board member with Pride at Work Canada, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the workplace climate for LGBT employees. She is a member of exeQutive, a community forum for LGBT leaders who promote, support and strengthen careers and businesses in Toronto. Scales co-chairs the Lieutenant Governor’s Forum on First Nations (Ontario).
She is the recipient of the 2011 Lynda Bowles Spirit Award, which honours female professionals who inspire other Deloitte women. Scales earned her MBA in Executive Management with specialization in Leadership in 2010.
