Bee Keeping:
Intermediate Course
Learn advanced techniques for successful management of bee colonies; stock assessment and nutritional supplements; advanced colony manipulation and swarm management; queen production methods and breeding considerations; selecting for hygienic behaviour and mite resistance; external environmental stresses to successful beekeeping; pests and pathogens; management for honey and pollination production and marketing; and moving
away from chemical dependency and the future of bees. Prerequisite: at least two seasons of bee keeping and/or Bee Keeping: Introductory Course.

Can I Eat that Mushroom?
A Mycological Adventure
in Sooke
A fun and informative weekend in and out of the woods, this identi cation course of edible mushrooms is for beginners and for those who know a few mushrooms but want to learn more. With a hands-on approach, you will gather mushrooms to identify through parataxonomy, be introduced to  eld guides, and enjoy a slide show with extensive discussion. Mushroom cleaning and storage techniques will also be discussed. This offering’s location, cost and time commitment differs from the Can I Eat that Mushroom?. Course available in early November (see below).There may be travel involved in the Saturday session depending on specimen availability.

Early Autumn Edibles of Southern Vancouver Island Nature’s bounty is at its fullest as summer comes to a close and we prepare for winter. This  eld-based course takes to the road as we explore many different habitats that produce fantastic fruits, nuts, mushrooms, and other enticing edibles. Hands-on instruction will focus on techniques for harvesting and processing wild foods while sharing excellent harvest locations and information about traditional plant uses by the area’s First Peoples. Come  ll your mind, mouth, and freezer!

Earth Day Family Nature Walk
Join Ken Elliott, member of Cowichan Tribes and renowned expert in native plants and their uses, for an Earth Day Family Walk exploring the native  ora of southern Vancouver Island. Walking the trails of RRU, Ken will inspire people of all ages to learn more about the native plants of the region and how these plants were used by the Coast Salish people. See the forest from a new perspective – and touch the Earth, as the Earth will touch you.

Ecology and Restoration
of Garry Oak Ecosystems
Garry oak ecosystems are among the most endangered habitats in Canada – reduced to less than 5% of their original range. Remaining areas are often degraded
by invasive species and other stressors. Restoration can aid the recovery of these special places and provide a pathway for positive connections between nature and human communities. This course examines the ecology, plant identi cation, plants,
and natural history of Garry oak ecosystems. You’ll learn  eld-tested practical techniques for enhancing degraded areas and methods for converting  elds and lawns to native meadow. Field trips included.
