Solo Performance Workshop

Making Art with Nature

This course introduces artists (e.g. Goldsworthy, Mendieta) who spend their time in nature, working with sticks, stones, earth and mud, not just to make aesthetically pleasing artworks, but to speak with nature and, more importantly, listen to it. We will explore responsible, respectful, playful, and contemplative ways to interact and create with nature’s debris and structures...outdoors! Each participant will work on a small scale individual art piece and the group will also make a larger scale artwork.

In the beautiful Japanese Gardens at Royal Roads, you will have an opportunity to read and listen to the poems by Chiyo-ni, an 18th century Buddhist nun. Discover how her words invite you to see the contrasts and comparisons to your own work, and how their historical and cultural relevance is important in today’s world. Poetry and the gardens will provide inspiration for composing our own haiku and making kimono art books.
